Jeff Kluever is a writer, speaker, and author from Des Moines, Iowa. In fifth grade, Jeff wrote his first novel, titled Sherman’s Will. Over 19 spine-tingling pages, the intrepid Detective Dominike determined that the General William T. Sherman artifacts stolen from the “National Historical Society of Atlanta” were taken by a spiteful, long-lost relative of Confederate General Joseph E. Johnston. It’s a convoluted story and the plot doesn’t make sense, but it was a nominal hit with his classmates. It took over 25 years to write his next novel, Waking the Shadows, and another four to complete Marching Home, and both are a major improvement on Sherman’s Will. For decades, Jeff has studied the Civil War, not only to increase his own knowledge, but to find ways to make that knowledge relevant, meaningful, and emotionally captivating for other audiences. Jeff holds a bachelor’s degree in history from Grinnell College, and a master’s degree from Carroll University, where he examined the impact of teaching history through narrative for his thesis. Whether serving as the Education Supervisor at Pamplin Historical Park and the National Museum of the Civil War Soldier, or delivering a presentation to a Rotary Club, Jeff makes history real and consequential for his audience. In May 1917, the United States opened the first Officers Training Camp for Black men at Fort Des Moines, and twenty-five years later, the first Officers Training Camp for women in military history. As a board member and museum volunteer, Jeff gives tours of the museum, located in south Des Moines.
